Print goes climate protection: The climate initiative of the print and media associations

In order for the print and media industry to remain an important economic player in the future, continuous development is also important in the area of sustainability. Because without more environmental protection, there is no future. It is almost as important to communicate the fact that such developments are taking place. After all, there would probably be far fewer negative preconceptions about the print industry if more people knew about it: Something is happening in the graphic arts industry when it comes to sustainability - and not just since yesterday.

One notable initiative in this context is the Climate initiative of the print and media associations. For more than 15 years, it has repeatedly set new standards for environmentally conscious action and offers companies a clear structure for reducing their CO₂ emissions. capture, to reduce and to compensate for this through targeted projects. At the same time, it is always important to ensure that sustainable developments do not stand in the way of the necessary economic efficiency. Let's take a closer look at the three stages of the initiative:

Determine

Companies can use a specially developed ISO standard-compliant CO₂ calculator that is tailored precisely to the needs of the printing industry. This tool can be used to quickly and easily record the CO₂ emissions of print products. The first step towards change.

Reduce

Finally, companies can follow up the data collected with specific measures to reduce emissions. These include promoting energy-efficient production processes, optimizing the use of materials and minimizing waste as much as possible. The aim is to significantly reduce the environmental impact per printed product produced.

Compensate

Despite all reduction efforts - and this applies to all sectors - not all CO₂ emissions can be avoided. For this reason, the climate initiative gives companies the opportunity to offset unavoidable residual emissions by supporting climate protection projects. These projects then help to protect the environment elsewhere. Such projects include, for example, reforestation measures or the promotion of renewable energies.

The climate initiative of the print and media associations enjoys the support of the Federal Ministry for the Environment and has established itself as an effective instrument for promoting sustainable development in the industry. By consistently applying this model, companies can not only improve their environmental footprint, but also actively contribute to global climate protection and strengthen their competitiveness.

The graphic arts industry is anything but yesterday's news when it comes to sustainable development.
